Video: Steve Thompson (yes, THAT Steve Thompson) scores amazing length of the pitch try for England legends

Yes, you read that correctly, the man who was once called a large oaf (or words to that effect) by Jerry Flannery, scored the best try of his career for an England legends selection against Australia last night.

Yes, you read that correctly, the man who was once called a large oaf (or words to that effect) by Jerry Flannery scored the best try of his career for an England legends selection against Australia last night.

Thompson, who won over 70 caps for England and toured with the Lions in 2005, wasn’t a bad player at all in his day but running the length of the field certainly wasn’t his forte. In fact, running more than 20 yards wasn’t his forte, which makes his stunning effort against the Australia legends all the more unbelievable yet impressive at the same time.

Receiving the ball just inside his own 22 during last night’s clash at the Stoop, which marked ten years since England won the World Cup Down Under, Thompson saw off a couple of admittedly token Wallaby tackles before selling a brilliant dummy and touching down the corner, much to the delight and indeed amazement of the crowd, the commentators and, more than likely, Thomson himself.

Finally, seven years on, Thomson has a fitting comeback for Fla after their infamous exchange during the 2006 Six Nations. Worth watching one more time? Oh, go on then…
