Warren Gatland will have his own reasons for removing Brian O’Driscoll from the Lions team, and indeed squad, but this video evidence paints a different picture of his midfield options.
Jamie Roberts as expected has returned from injury to take up his position at inside centre, but rather than renew the highly successful partnership from 2009, he has opted for the all-Welsh midfield with Jonathan Davies outside him.
The move has caused a huge stir, not least considering that although some have viewed O’Driscoll’s performances as slightly under his ridiculously high standards, Davies has not appeared to offer anything more than the Leinster centre.
Indeed this video analysis by Irish freelance journalist Murray Kinsella looked at where the midfield partnership broke down last weekend, and without being overly critical of Davies, especially given he was playing in the number 12 jersey, O’Driscoll can count himself most unfortunate to be cut from the team.
The analysis was put together before the shock decision to drop the man who hasn’t missed a single tackle on tour, but makes for even more fascinating viewing in light of today’s developments.
