Despite being dominated for long periods, Manchester United eked out a comfortable win over Spurs at White Hart Lane to effectively eliminate ‘Arry’s men from the title race.

The Premier League champions were extremely lethargic in the first period, but as they tend to do, still managed to be one up at half-time when Wayne Rooney headed in Ashley Young’s corner just before the break.

Spurs had the ball in the net before that, but referee Martin Atkinson ruled that Emmanuel Adebayor had handled the ball before flicking it to the net, a decision that looked very harsh in retrospect. Have a look at the incident below and judge for yourself whether the referee was right or whether the Red Devils were on the end of another favourable decision from officialdom.

The second half started in a similar pattern, but once Young volleyed in United’s second, the fight went out of Spurs and the visitors looked comfortable. Young applied the coup de grace shortly after his first goal with a brilliantly taken second, echoing his strike in the 8-2 defeat of Arsenal earlier in the season. Have a look at it for yourself in the video below.

Jermain Defoe pulled back a late consolation for Spurs, but the game was done and dusted at that stage.

For United, a fight to the death with bitter rivals Manchester City awaits. For Tottenham, having looked like title contenders at one stage, they’ll now be looking anxiously at the two London teams battling it out for the Champions League places below them.
