WATCH: Christy Dignam tells Martin O’Neill he’ll break Gareth Bale’s leg ahead of Ireland v Wales

Just to clarify, he was only joking.

Their performance of ‘The Green Fields of France’ was rightly lauded as the highlight of the Late Late Show, but there was another lovely moment featuring Christy Dignam and Finbar Furey on Friday night.

With fellow guest Martin O’Neill alongside them on the couch, Christy praised the Ireland manager for the remarkable job he’s done with the national football team and spoke of the pride felt by the nation following the Euros in the summer, with Finbar nodding on approvingly.

Things have only got better for the Boys in Green since then, of course, with qualification for the World Cup in Russia next year looking very much on the cards after a lightning start to the qualifying campaign that sees us sitting pretty at the top of Group D.

Next up is a clash against Euro 2016 semi-finalists Wales at the Aviva at the end of March, a game that will likely feature Real Madrid’s Gareth Bale, whose recovery from an ankle injury is progressing better than had been originally anticipated.

We’re sure Martin O’Neill would never resort to such methods, but Christy was keen to assure him that he and Finbar could sort Bale out if needs be ahead of the big game in two months’ time.
