“When we needed a big lift, we got it.”
Rory Best paid his thanks to a packed Aviva Stadium this evening after Ireland’s tough 27-24 win over Australia.
“Look everyone dug deep and it’s a very special day for me personally, and I’d just like to thank everyone here for making it that. And most importantly the boys, you know, I can’t take my hat off enough to them. Give them massive credit for the character they showed.”
The man who has captained Ireland to wins over South Africa, New Zealand and now Australia in the past 12 months said: “It’s been quite a 12 months since the World Cup. I have to give massive credit to the very young kids out there who stood up and there’s a very bright future for Irish rugby.”

If Ireland’s hooker was in contention for Lions captaincy before today’s showing, he’ll be in with more than a shout now.
