Mark Webber was forced into early retirement from this year’s Monza Grand Prix, heating up the battle for second in the drivers championship.

Four laps into this year’s Monza Grand Prix in Italy, Webber tried to round a corner only to hit into Italian Felipe Massa. The collision caused Webber’s front wing to cave underneath the car providing him with little to no grip.

The early retirement could not have come at a worse time as Webber can now kiss the drivers title goodbye unless his Red Bull Racing teammate, Sebastian Vettel, has a disastrous end of season. The initial crash between Massa and Webber caused the loss of Webber’s front wing. From here the lack of downforce caused him to lose grip and go straight off the track. Here’s what happened:

Speaking after the crash Webber said, “We are all battling for second now.

“Seb (Vettel) needs to have an incredibly disappointing finish to the season for anyone to take the championship off him.

“Clearly the car was good today so it’s a missed opportunity for me.”

The race was won fairly easily by Webber’s teammate Vettel, who came in nine seconds ahead of Jenson Button in second and 14 laps ahead of the last car to finish.

The next race will be held in Singapore on September 25.
