Most of the talk leading up to the World Cup was around who would finish runners-up to Spain in Group B, a position that seemed sure to mean a game against hosts Brazil in the last 16. That sounded like a fate worse than escape from the group of death.

Holland took no heed of that and absolutely destroyed Spain 5-1. Chile got off to a decent start too defeating Australia 3-1. Holland struggled a bit against the Soccerroos, but Chile’s defeat of Spain was very impressive given that the Spanish were supposed to bounce back from what was described as a one-off against Holland. Chile, outfought, outplayed and just had too much for Spain and deservedly won 2-0 to knock them out.

They meet head-to-head today and Holland only need the draw to ensure finishing top on account of a superior goal difference. We don’t think Holland have the capability of playing for a draw, but with Van Persie missing because of suspension, we feel the Alexis Sanchez-inspired Chile will prevail in a high-scoring encounter.

We are plumping for Chile to defeat Holland at 7/4, thus avoiding the inevitable clash with host nation Brazil in the last 16.
