Cracked smartphone screens could be a thing of the past very soon

Carl Kinsella

We all know the gut-wrenching feeling…

Your phone has slipped from your hand and landed on its face. You’ve already heard that screen-shattering crack. You turn it over, hoping against hope, but your prayers are meaningless now. Your screen is bollixed.

This modern horror is soon to be a thing of the past, as Corning unveil Gorilla Glass 5 which they say survives up to 80 percent of the time when dropped from 1.6 meters.

The previous version of Gorilla Glass – which is used in the vast majority of smartphones (including Samsung, HTC, Lenovo, Huawei and LG) – was only able to survive falls from about a metre high.

We don’t imagine that our smartphones will achieve Nokia levels of longevity just yet, but we’re glad to see an improvement.
