REVIEW: The Google Pixel 7 Pro is top of the class for its camera

Rory Cashin

The new phone is also several hundred euros cheaper than the latest iPhone.

In an attempt to compare like for like, the Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max has a 6.7-inch screen, and will set you back at least €1,489.

The new Google Pixel 7 Pro, also with a 6.7-inch screen, starts at €899. Yep, almost €600 cheaper. That is a HECK of a chunk of change.

But a phone can be as cheap as it likes, it won’t matter a single iota if its isn’t easy, fun or useful to have a part of your day-to-day life.

Thankfully, the Pixel 7 Pro doesn’t disappoint in this regard, as the camera is as good as any (and, in most cases, better) than any of the competitors’ models that cost significantly more.

Match that with an improved OS working off Android 13, and this is an absolute must-own for anyone on this side of the Android VS Apple divide.

As Google continues to successfully integrate with more and more aspects of our lives, from the Google Home, Google Nest, and the newly-released Google Pixel Watch, the Pixel 7 Pro will sit comfortably at the centre of all of those, the item that you’ll obviously be using the most.

We’ll start with the camera… or, really, the cameras. There are three on the back, now housed in a slick silver bar, which can range from 0.5x to 30x. The main 50MP camera is particularly impressive, capable of capturing a huge amount of detail across a number of different light levels. Real Tone, Photo Unblur, Night Sight and Guided Frame are just some of the options available for you to get lost in the details of as you test the limits of the camera’s capabilities.

In terms of other new and improved features, the Google Assistant is as intuitive and cutting edge as expected. Small things like transcribing voice notes into text – if you can’t actively listen to a message but still need to know what it says – are thoughtful and impressive, while the battery life will still get you through to about 36 hours on a single charge, even while using the phone itself a significant amount.

Genuinely, this comes down to have a top-of-the-range phone for a relatively cheap price. The Google Pixel 7 Pro gives you everything you could possibly want from the best Android phones on the market, but won’t completely demolish your bank balance in order to give it to you.
