Over the course of the last few years, many of us have made our peace with the fact that Facebook knows more about us than we’d probably like.

However, this morning the social media giant proves that it knows a lot less about certain people than we thought, in the most striking way possible.

Many people woke up to a message that either they or their friends were dead.

It appears that a lot of people ended up getting these notifications, so if you’re one of them, don’t worry. You’re still alive. Facebook just screwed up:

A statement from Facebook read: “For a brief period today, a message meant for memorialised profiles was mistakenly posted to other accounts. This was a terrible error that we have now fixed. We are very sorry that this happened and we worked as quickly as possible to fix it.”
