Irish people pay almost double the European average for broadband internet

This won't go down well

This won’t go down well.

Irish people pay almost double the amount for fixed broadband internet than the European average, according to a report by the Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI).

Rather than a direct price comparison, the report sought to compare the cost of fixed broadband “when measured as a proportion of income” in European countries and as it turns out, Ireland comes off looking expensive when compared to the rest of the continent.

The report found that Irish households pay 2.2 per cent of their gross income towards the cost of broadband compared with a European average of 1.4 per cent.

It also revealed that Ireland had 96 per cent broadband coverage compared with the EU average of 97 per cent and that ‘take-up’ of broadband in Irish households was at 62 per cent.

Ireland ranked 7th in the EU when it came to taking up mobile broadband and 9th when it came to subscriptions for ‘fast broadband’ (at least 30 Megabits per second).
