One of your favourite Snapchat features is coming to Facebook

What do you think of this?

Snapchat are often ahead of the curve these days and other social media are playing catch-up on the hugely successful app.

In recent weeks, we’ve seen Instagram attempting to expand their (totally and utterly original, and in no way copied) stories idea by offering users the option to view strangers stories as well as followers.

Now, Facebook are following the lead of Snapchat by attempting to introduce overlay filters on their live videos, similar to what Snapchat introduced some time ago on their app.

At The Wall Street Journal’s WSJDLive conference, brought to our attention by Quartz, Facebook’s chief product officer, Chris Cox was on stage and he pulled out his phone, started to Facebook live stream and demonstrated the new feature that the company has been working on.

They were attempting to show that Facebook can continue to grow, despite their already mammoth number of users standing at 1.7 billion, and they believe a perfect outlet to supplement that growth is the use of Facebook live.

On-stage, Cox used a new feature that they’ve been developing which overlays a filter onto the live video, which turns the live footage on screen into the style of work of an artist, in this case Van Gogh.

One of the main difficulties of this feature was making the filter instantaneous and without any lag in the shooting.

The feature is just a beta and can match the styles of an artist through a technique called style transfer, but there’s no word as of yet when they will be rolled out for users.

Until then, you can work away with some of these to impress your friends.
