WATCH: The story trailer for the new Tomb Raider game looks violently, viciously dark

Rory Cashin

The end of the beginning.

The very first Tomb Raider game was released back in 1996, and while it was a massive hit with fans and spawned many, many sequels, it did also feature Lara Croft battling a T-Rex, as well as a dragon in an alternative dimension version of The Great Wall Of China.

Realistic, it was not.

So when the series kind of fell out of favour with the public, a reboot was put in place, and 2013’s Tomb Raider put us back to a young Lara Croft, pre-the raiding of any tombs, on her very first mysterious mission.

It was a massive hit, which resulted in 2015’s Rise Of The Tomb Raider, another big hit, and 2018’s movie series reboot with Alicia Vikander taking the lead role in a far more grounded story than the one that Angelina Jolie was faced with, and the $94 million production has so far made $270 million at the box office, so we imagine a sequel to that is also in the works.

So it would appear that all things Lara Croft are very much back in fashion, which brings us to the threequel to the reboot, the upcoming Shadow Of The Tomb Raider.

The plot involves Lara raiding an ancient Mayan tomb and pilfering a cursed dagger, which many believe will trigger the end of the world as we know it. Lara isn’t one to believe in such nonsense, except that all of the signs of the apocalypse that she has been warned about begin to take place, and it is up to her and her alone to save the world.

We’ve got our first look at the story trailer below, which doesn’t actually feature any game-play footage, but does have us sufficiently excited to getting back to our dual guns and blasting away endangered species in tropical locals.

Shadow Of The Tomb Raider is set to land on Xbox One, PS4 and PC on Friday 14 September 2018.
