Tech Corner: What no longer keeps me awake at night

No, I’m not about to bare my soul.

It’s another edition of Tech Corner and all I can say is, welcome to the party.

I’ve had a number of epiphanies since beginning Tech Corner many weeks ago – five weeks to be exact – and foremost among them is that I no longer need to microwave my coffee.

Although, I have to say the number of people who’ve come out of the woodwork to tell me they microwave their coffee is both surprising and unnecessary, I’ve moved on with my life, quit trying to drag me into the past.

This week it’s a bit of a mixture between tech and health as we took a look at a product which is designed to help you if working from home, joining countless Zoom meetings and staring at your phone all evening.

It’s been much-discussed that the blue light emitted from your smartphones and computer screens can have a detrimental impact on the quality of your sleep.

The light from our devices is “short-wavelength-enriched,” which means that it contains higher concentration of blue light than you’ll find in natural light and blue light is known to affect levels of the sleep-inducing hormone melatonin.

While the jury is still out on the long-term effects of blue light on human eye health, some studies support the train of thought that it can have an effect on sleep quality.

Enter blue light filtering glasses – or more specifically, Ambr Eyewear glasses.

I’ve been using a pair of Ambr Eyewear glasses which filter blue light from your devices for the past few years and anecdotally, I can say that I’ve found they made a difference when staring at your screen for long periods in the evenings.

I find myself reaching for them in the afternoon as the weariness begins to set in.

The idea is, by filtering out the blue light, you should sleep better, your eyes should be less tired and you should have less headaches if you’re prone to them from staring at a screen all day.

Should you buy?

If you’re someone who spends a lot of their day in front of a screen for work, or you’ve been finding your eyes very tired, they might be for you.

There’s a variety of price points that you can check out on their website, and in fairness, they look decent as well.
