Have you heard the one about the Irish drunken stereotype who was cartoonised, developed into an app and became a challenge to people around the world ‘to release your inner Irishman’  for St Patrick’s Day?

In an act of blatant Paddywhackery, there is a new app for Android called ‘St Patrick’s Day Drunk Lep’, a game featuring a drunken leprechaun called Shamus McDerp. That’s right, Shamus McDerp.

The challenge is to keep the drunken leprechaun standing without him falling over. Obviously the more he drinks, the drunker he gets. You tilt the phone accordingly to try and keep his balance. The longer he stays upright, the better your score.

Exposure to the app has increased ever since an opinion piece criticising it appeared on the Irish Central Website and needless to say, the author of that opinion piece, Patrick Collins, is not the only one unimpressed.

We can’t imagine why…
