They were the first to make it into space and now this. Is there anything those Russians can’t do?
They say that pigs can’t fly, but anyone who orders a ham and cheese pizza from Russian pizza chain DoDo might beg to differ as the pizza pioneers have begun using drones to deliver their orders.
According to RT, Russian pizzeria DoDo completed their first unmanned delivery at the weekend and although they no doubt needed a slice of luck and had to place their crust in the technology at their disposal, it appeared as if everything went off without a hitch.
Using GPS and video cameras to find the recipient of the pizza, the drone completed its delivery in half an hour and the owner of the restaurant in question called the recipients of every pizza delivered by drone to ensure that it had arrived and that everything was in order.
As you’ll see in the video above, the drone flies 20 metres above the ground so as to prevent anyone from interfering with it and once it arrives at its destination, the delivery is lowered to the ground via a cable.
If the demonstration is anything to go by, the role of the pizza delivery man will not be completely redundant as DoDo had a man on hand to collect the price of the pizza and dispense change where necessary, but we would imagine that customers will have to pay by card and thereby eradicate the need for a pizza delivery guy altogether.
Dominos did carry out a similar drone delivery before but only as a one-off stunt, whereas it appears as if drone deliveries are going to be the way of the future for DoDo and if it catches on in Russia, then what’s stopping it from catching on all over the world?
It’s a pity about the fate of the pizza delivery man, however; so many good memories.
