Video: (Quite scary) X-men fanatic makes fully-automatic and fully functioning pair of Wolverine claws

We have to admit that these are impressive but we wouldn’t exactly be too keen on meeting this guy to congratulate him in person. You’ll soon see why.

We have to admit that these are impressive but we wouldn’t exactly be too keen on meeting this guy to congratulate him in person. You’ll soon see why.

With the latest X-Men movie, X-Men: Days of Future Past, set for release in cinemas later this month, fans of the series are getting pretty excited right now and one of them got so excited that he decided to build himself a pair of fully functioning, and admittedly very cool, pair of Wolverine claws. As you do.

The ‘fan’ in question is one Colin Furze, a British inventor, a former contributor to Gadget Geeks, (which aired on Sky a couple of years back) and holder of a number of obscure Guinness World Records such as creating the world’s largest bonfire and the world’s fastest mobility scooter. Talented though he undoubtedly is, he’s not your average Joe Soap that’s for sure.

That much comes across fairly quickly in his presentation of his latest project, a fully-functioning and fully automatic pair of Wolverine claws, which work with a backpack using compressed air to pop the 12-inch spikes and can be unleashed and retracted at the touch of a button located at the user’s (in this case, Furze’s) hand.

From a purely technical and geeky point of view, it’s hard not to be impressed with what Furze has done here and although the mad scientist bit he puts on through the course of the video may well be an act, it was convincing enough for us to be perfectly happy to congratulate him on his achievement from afar, rather than up close and personal.

Granted, he’s not as scary looking as Hugh Jackman can be when he’s got the claws out, but he’s pretty damn close…
