There’s only one major success story for the Irish this weekend as Rory McIlroy stole the limelight as he spectacularly won the Quail Hollow Championship in North Carolina – a first-ever victory on the PGA Tour for the County Down man who turns 21 tomorrow.

McIlroy, ‘a superstar is born’ according to the Irish Independent, smashed the course record with a phenomenal 62 to beat Masters Champion Phil Mickelson into second by four shots. McIlroy has become the youngest man to win on the US Tour since Tiger Woods won his first title at the Las Vegas invitational in 1996.

Meanwhile, in Rugby it was not a good weekend for the Irish. All three provinces involved in European Cup rugby were defeated. Connacht lost out to Toulan in the Amlin Challenge Cup semi-final on Friday night while Munster and Leinster were both dumped out of the respective Heineken Cup semi-finals to Biarritz and Toulouse.

An all-French final for 22 May and the Irish Times claims “Who knows, it might have been different if the semi-finals were at home, or even on neutral grounds…” Unfortunately, hindsight counts for nothing.
