Having been voted by his peers as the best player in the Premier League this season, Gareth Bale was today also revealed as the top dog in the eyes of the football writers.

Members of the football media had an advantage over the players in that they had until today to cast their vote, although it must also be said that, unlike the PFA awards where votes were cast before it happened, the Luis Suarez biting incident may have affected his prospects of winning this particular award.

In the end it seemed to have quite a significant impact as Suarez received barely any votes (2 votes, less than one per cent), with Gareth Bale receiving 53 per cent of the votes ahead of Robin van Persie, who collected 43 per cent, with Juan Mata finishing in third place.

With 19 goals in 29 games, it’s hard to argue with the choice of Bale as the Player of the Season, although as is the case whenever these types of awards are announced, it is likely to create plenty of debate amongst football fans.
