He was confusing at times and barely comprehensible at times, but Giovanni Trapattoni’s press conferences were often the source of hilarity. Here are some of the funniest bits from the last five years.

The veteran Italian finally parted company with the Boys in Green on Wednesday morning, a decision that had been coming for a while after a disastrous World Cup campaign that ended in a damp squib after defeats to Sweden and Austria in the last week.

Despite the inevitability of Trap’s departure, a lot of Irish fans will have fond memories of his time in charge of the national team, particularly before the Euros, after which things began to go downhill at a rapid speed.

Trap never quite mastered the English language during his time in charge and while that often led to confusion amongst his squad and amongst the members of the press, it also often led to some hilarious moments at his press conferences, sometimes unintentional, sometimes not.

Darren Cleary of FM 104 has put together a compilation of some of Trap’s funniest moments from his press conferences during his time as manager and was kind enough to send it our way and there are some absolute gems in there, from the famous ‘the cat is in the sack’ quote to his to declaration of love for the ladies after he got confused when expressing his admiration for Kevin Doyle as a player and a man.

Arrivederci Trap, there was certainly never a dull moment.
