He might be one of the elder statesmen of Irish broadcasting but Jimmy Magee is getting hammered today for his comments defending Michelle Smith and Lance Armstrong.
The achievements of Michelle Smith in Atlanta and Lance Armstrong’s record breaking Tour de France performances are, how can we put this, a little tainted.
Yes, Smith does still have her medals but her dramatic improvements pre-Atlanta, and her dramas post Games regarding drugs tests, mean that questions and suspicions about her performances are justified.
Similarly the wealth of information we now know about Lance Armstrong, from numerous books, articles and investigations in the US means any objective observer would have to be deeply suspicious about what he did in the saddle.
Yet, as you can hear above, Jimmy doesn’t think so. Pesky journalists, eh?
