Beam me up Johnny! TD sends some out-of-this-world alien Christmas cards

A TD sending out Christmas cards with aliens on them? What's next?

JOE

If you thought the news that the Government spent almost €10,000 on Christmas cards was bad, wait until you see the random stuff they were printing on them.

Independent TD for Waterford John Halligan sent out a…strange card to his constituents. It was so strange that he was even invited onto the John Murray Show on RTE Radio One yesterday to discuss it.

The theme of the card? Extraterrestrial. As in, aliens. No, we’re being serious. See for yourself:

The card was a parody of the famous scene painted in the Sistine chapel, only this time an alien’s finger was touching a human’s finger. You’ll probably recall a very similar scene from the old film ET.

The Irish Independent reports Mr Halligan said that since he was an atheist, he sent out the alien-themed cards (did we mention there’s spaceships thrown in there too?) as an alternative to traditional Christmas scenes.

“I’ve kept up the reputation of sending an oddball Christmas card to people at Christmas time,” he said yesterday.

“They go down quite well. Often people have rang me and asked me what it’s about and I say, ‘Well, it’s a different card.’”

Riveting stuff. Can we start making the “Beam me up Johnny…” jokes yet?
