Burn, Davie, Burn: Young Fulham defender laps up United’s outdated tactics

Fulham defender Dan Burn is unlikely to be on David Moyes’s Christmas card list.

Fulham defender Dan Burn is unlikely to be on David Moyes’s Christmas card list.

The 21-year-old was handed a surprise start against Manchester United on Sunday and says he hasn’t headed the ball as many times since he was in the Conference.

The 6ft 7in stopper saw United pump 81 crosses into the Cottagers’ box during the 2-2 draw. Somewhat ironically, neither of United’s goals came from a centre.

“I’ve never headed that many balls since the Conference,” said Burn, who used to play for Darlington.

“We knew that was going to happen and I was happy for them to play like that. I’m six foot seven. It helps when dealing with those sort of balls.

“When we started dropping further back we wanted to get more compact and make them play around us because we had the strength in numbers.

“Manchester United still have amazing players – on another day they could have scored more often but we defended really well.”
