Carragher says Suarez is “too good for Liverpool”

Jamie Carragher has always been lauded for his honesty and if his first column for the Daily Mail is anything to go by, we should be in for a great season of punditry on Sky Sports.

Jamie Carragher has always been lauded for his honesty and if his first column for the Daily Mail is anything to go by, we should be in for a great season of punditry on Sky Sports.

Gary Neville has brought a new level of analysis to Sky Sports, so much so that Monday Night Football is as much about the insights as it is on the pitch itself. When it was announced that Carragher would be joining fellow defender Neville in studio this season, most felt it would only enhance the offering. And on his writing debut in the Daily Mail today, he was certainly pulling no punches.

With the Luis Suarez saga dragging on, the Scouser admitted that the Uruguayan footballer is right to seek higher challenges than those at Anfield.

“Luis Suarez is too good for Liverpool. He is one of the top players in the world, whereas Liverpool were only the seventh best team in England last season,” he told The Daily Mail.

“His talents are greater than the stage on which he plays. Not only does he deserve to play in the Champions League, he should be winning it.”

However the recently retired defender questioned the wisdom in a move to Arsenal, the club that appear to be leading the race to sign the talented striker.

“If Barcelona, Real Madrid or Bayern Munich wanted him, I would wish Luis all the luck in the world and staunchly defend him. Luis Suarez is also too good for Arsenal. In recent years, they haven’t challenged for trophies; they have not made an impact in the Champions League and they are no closer to winning the Premier League.”

Possible words of advice from Carragher

Carragher also gave an insight into the poor attitude that Suarez has developed in light of all the speculation, something he noticed first hand when he was training with the squad ahead of Steven Gerrard’s testimonial.

“I took part in a training session at Melwood before Steven Gerrard’s testimonial last Saturday and I was alarmed by the Luis Suarez with whom I was sharing a pitch.

“From his first day at Liverpool, I had been used to seeing a warrior  who loved his football and charged around with great enthusiasm. On this occasion, however, his attitude was completely different. He didn’t want the ball and had no interest in getting involved. He stood on the periphery, with shoulders slumped.”

You can read the rest of his column here, where he tells of Fernando Torres’ poor attitude towards the end of his time at Anfield, why Wayne Rooney should stay at Old Trafford, his prized signed shirt from Leo Messi and why Craig Bellamy’s autobiography is one of the best he has ever read.

We look forward to hearing more from Carra over the course of the season.
