If one Castlebar town councillor has his way, the wearing of hoodies will be banned in the Mayo town.
It’s not April 1, honestly. According to a report in today’s Irish Independent, Michael Kilcoyne, an Independent member of the Town Council, has called for a ban on the hoodie as a crime prevention measure.
He claims a number of crimes in the town are unsolved as the faces of the culprits are covered by the hoods being up, making the CCTV footage useless.
“I want them to consider the measure. There have been a number of incidents where hoodies have been used by criminals to evade identification. This is something that is being raised with me by concerned locals,” Kilcoyne is quoted as saying.
The councillor is at pains to say that he does not regard all hoodie wearers as bad sorts, but he said he wanted to look at the idea to help out residents and business owners in the town.
As far as we know crime happened in Castlebar long before hoodies were invented and we are pretty sure that if they were banned (a highly unlikely scenario), the crime rate in the town wouldn’t plummet either.
