Cyclists will have to be extra careful when out on the roads as new regulations will allow the Gardaí to hand out €50 fines to anyone caught breaking safety laws.

According to reports today, the Government is getting set to introduce new safety laws that will see a cyclist receiving a ‘minimum’ €50 fine for cycling like a dick. Okay, so that’s not exactly how they worded it, but it’s what they meant.

Cyclists will receive a fine if they’re caught breaking a red light, cycling on a footpath and for overtaking in a dangerous situation.

The offending cyclist will have 56 days to pay the fine, otherwise it could go to court where you could end up getting a larger fine and even the possibility of getting your bike impounded.

According to the Irish Independent, “officials are also considering adding other offences including a fine for cycling the wrong way on one-way streets, not having lights or cycling while under the influence of alcohol.”

There’s no word yet as to when exactly the new laws will come into play, but Transport Minister Leo Varadkar hopes to have the system up and running by the end of this year or early 2014.

Cyclists, you have been warned…
