The Lonely Planet Guidebook is an essential for all globe trotters and now the Northern city has been placed as the fourth best city in the world to visit.

San Francisco was named in first place followed by Amsterdam and Hyderabad in India.

The city ranks higher than cities such as Beijing, Christchurch and Addis Ababa in Ethiopia in the top ten, with the guidebook offering some clues as to why it has reached such a lofty position.

“Derry is a brilliant example of a city that has bounced back from difficult times. This is a city with heart, which shines through in its exciting arts and music scene.”

Gothenburg was named as the ‘best value’ destination for 2013 with Montenegro the top country to visit.
