Do you commute in and out of work on Dublin Bus? If so, you could find yourself in a spot of bother next week as unions have threatened strike action starting this Sunday.

Thousands of commuters may have to find alternative transport to and from work soon as bus drivers in the capital plan to strike over cost reduction measures.

Not only will it leave plenty of commuters without a ride to work, it could also cause a potential traffic nightmare in and out of the city as people take their cars instead of public transport.

According to Dublin Bus, the company needs to cut €11.7m in spending in order to make the service “financial stability”. The Irish Independent reports that if the drivers were to strike on a weekday, Dublin Bus could lose out on up to €600,000.

Talks between the two unions that represent the drivers, SIPTU & the NRBU, and Dublin Bus have been going on for over a year now, but management announced that the cuts would be going ahead last Monday.

There’s been no definitive word yet as to whether the drivers will definitely be striking or not, but it will be interesting to see what happens over the next few days… (At least it’s a handy excuse for showing up to work late on Monday. Just don’t tell your boss we said that)
