Alex Ferguson has given his first full-length interview since leaving his post as Man Utd manager and he has shed more light on the Rooney saga and also disclosed he was offered the Chelsea job.

The Scot gave an hour-long interview to Charlie Rose on PBS in the US last night and gave his full backing to his successor David Moyes who has had a difficult start at Old Trafford,  while also dismissing any suggestions that he could make a dramatic return to the hotseat should results not improve.

“I’m not interested in managing again or getting myself worked up about Manchester United’s results,” Ferguson told Rose. Guess that rules out the Ireland gig too.

“United are in good hands with David Moyes. He will be fine. He’s a good manager.”

Even when pressed on a possible return, Fergie was keen to stress that it is a non-runner and warned those that fancy a flutter that it would be money wasted as he has other interests he wants to pursue.

“You would be throwing your money down the drain if you put any money on me coming back as a manager.I made my decision. The timing was perfect. There is no way back for me now. I’ve got a new life.”

“I want to go the Kentucky Derby and the US Masters, the Melbourne Cup. I want to visit vineyards in Tuscany and France.”

Fergie also admitted to Rose that Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich tried to lure the Scot to Stamford Bridge when he first arrived in England, though that was quickly turned down.

“They used an agent to approach me when Abramovich first took over the club and I said no chance,” he conceded.

Ferguson repeated his assertion that Wayne Rooney had asked to leave United the day after the club won the title last season.

But he said he was impressed with the way the striker had turned his form around and was playing with his old verve and energy.

“The young players will learn from Wayne Rooney and he’ll get something from them,” he said while also waxing lyrical on Michael Owen’s professionalism while he was at Old Trafford despite his limited game time.

During the 60 minute chat they also discussed a wide range of topics including the American Civil War, while Fergie also stressed that one should never hold grudges. Yes, the same Fergie who didn’t speak to the BBC for seven years and had a fractious relationship with officials over the years.

Great to see that during such a revealing interview he clearly shows he hasn’t lost his sense of humour.
