Carlow Intermediate club Fighting Cocks GFC have raised an objection with the Carlow County Board after being denied senior status next season despite winning the Intermediate Championship this year.
The name Fighting Cocks might imply otherwise, but the GAA club of Leinster and Ireland rugby star Sean O’Brien is one of the smallest in Carlow and last month they celebrated their first ever Intermediate Football title after 73 years of trying.
Winning an intermediate title normally means an automatic promotion to the senior grade but without warning, Fighting Cocks have been informed that they will be playing intermediate football again next season because of structural changes to the Football Championship which the Carlow County Board plan to introduce from next season.
While Fighting Cocks could have accepted their fate if it had been flagged in advance, they are angry that they are only being informed of the situation after winning the Carlow Championship and going on to represent Carlow in the Leinster club intermediate Championship.
The matter is going to a vote in Carlow tomorrow night and after raising awareness of the their plight, Fighting Cocks are calling on GAA people to support their cause.
