Melanie Verwoerd, the partner of the late RTE personality Gerry Ryan, has been dismissed from her high-powered position on the board of Unicef Ireland.
Ms Verwoerd was relieved of her position because of the publicity which surrounded her association with Ryan, according to a report in the Sunday Independent.
The high-profile radio and television star died in April 2010, with a post-mortem revealing that he had taken significant amounts of cocaine in the hours before his death.
And the Sindo alleges that Ryan’s former partner - who had been chief executive of the charity and has also been involved in politics during a formidable career - has now paid a heavy price for his lifestyle.
The decision to remove Ms Verwoerd from her position has not been publicly announced by Unicef Ireland, but the newspaper quotes her as saying, “All I can say is that I have been dismissed, I am making no further comment.”
