David Moyes may have raised a few eyebrows with his overhaul of the backroom team at Manchester United, but he will have got the doubters back on side with two major appointments today.

Manchester United today confirmed that Ryan Giggs has been appointed as player/coach by Moyes with immediate effect and while we all know what he can do as a player (in more ways than one, nudge, wink) it will be interesting to see what he offers from a coaching perspective from next season on.

Giggs has been taking his coaching badges for some time now and is due to attain the UEFA Pro Licence next summer but having signed a one-year extension to his playing contract at the tail end of last season, he will also be available for first-team duty for next season at least.

Commenting on Giggs’ appointment, David Moyes said: “I’m delighted that Ryan has accepted the chance to become player/coach. His success and ability to adapt his game over a number of years gives him an unrivalled perspective on the modern game. His career is an example to any aspiring young player and I’m sure that both he and the players will benefit from his new role.”

The man himself added: “It’s a great privilege to be appointed a player/coach. I hope I will be able to bring my experience to bear, having been both a player and part of the Manchester United family for so long. It’s no secret that I have been taking my qualifications and I see this as the first step in my future career. I’m really looking forward to working alongside David and the team.”

As well as Giggs, Moyes is expected to add former Everton captain and former Manchester United player Phil Neville to his coaching staff in the coming days. Neville was spotted at United’s Carrington training ground today and is expected to take up a coaching role before they embark on a tour of the Far East later this month.

From Fergie’s fledglings to Moyes’ men, eh?
