A goalkeeper in Uruguay has been forced to retire from the game after a domestic accident saw him left with just a thumb on his left hand.

Juan Obelar, a former player for Uruguayan giants Penarol, who was without a club at the time of the accident, had been taking six months off from football before a planned return in January, but now has been forced to call time on his career after the horrific accident on Monday.

“I was doing a few things for my house, putting wood through a plane and the next thing I know the machine ripped off four fingers,” he told local reporters.

“I was on my own, I didn’t have help from anyone and the only digit I had left was my thumb.”

While he underwent emergency surgery to reconstruct his hand, there was no way of saving the fingers and Obelar is justifiably upset and struggling to come to terms with the accident.

“I feel so awful, this is the most horrendous thing that has ever happened to me. It is a very painful moment,” he added.

We can’t begin to imagine.
