Hollywood legend Tony Curtis, star of Some Like It Hot and Spartacus, has died at the age of 85. The actor passed away peacefully in bed yesterday according to a representative for Curtis’ daughter and actress Jamie Lee Curtis.
The Oscar-nominated actor, born Bernard Schwartz in 1925, began his career in 1949 and starred in over 140 films, including some of his most famous roles in The Sweet Smell of Success, The Defiant Ones and The Boston Strangler. Curtis also received an Oscar nod for his Defiant Ones role alongside Sidney Poitier.
The actor was married six times, with actress Janet Leigh his first and most famous wife. Curtis fathered two children, actresses Jamie Lee and Kelly Curtis through his first marriage, while he also fathered a further four children from his second and third marriages to Christine Kaufmann and Leslie Allen.
His health had begun to deteriorate in recent years, and in 2006 he nearly died of pneumonia, leading him to need a wheelchair and only able to walk short distances.
Curtis is survived by his wife, Jill Vandeberg and five of his children.
