Irish musician kicks Madonna off the top spot in album chart

An Irish stonemason, who likes to play music in his spare time, has knocked Madonna off the number one spot for album sales in Ireland. Impressive...

Madonna has been having a hard time lately. First Deadmau5 called her a “f**king idiot.” Then she was criticised for her use of drug slang on stage. Then for the clothes she wears in her new music video. It’s been a tough week.

We imagine, then, that she’s not going to be thrilled when she finds out that her new album, MDNA, has been booted off the top spot in the Irish album charts by a singing Irish stonemason. Yes, seriously.

The Irish Times reports that Mick Flannery, a 29 year old man from Blarney, was busy making a fireplace when he received a phone call telling him that his CD had beaten Madonna’s MDNA and was the bestselling album in Ireland this week. Not bad for a lad from Cork, right?

“It’s very difficult to take in, it’s a strange experience to hear you’re number one,” said Mick.

Apparently after he heard the news, he promptly celebrated the success in a local pub. Mick’s album Red to Blue is his third release and has placed him firmly as one of the best singer-songwriters in Ireland.

Mick has always been a genuine artist, shunning the typical promotional antics and instead choosing to rely on word-of-mouth sales. Until now, his work has never had any mainstream success so the musician had been filing the space between gigs by working as a stonemason.

“I think the No 1 spot for the album is down to the people who have come out to the gigs over the last few years and them trusting me enough to go and buy the full album in its first week of release,” said Mick, not letting his new success go to his head.

Madonna, may have her multi-million tours and her embarrassingly skimpy leotards, but clearly, Ireland has the talent.
