Ireland’s James McClean has confirmed that he will be headed to ply his trade in the Championship with Wigan
James McClean has announced on his Twitter account that he will move to Wigan and join compatriot James McCarthy in the Championship.

The news was also confirmed in the last few minutes from the lads at the Football Association of Ireland.

While McClean’s form did appear to suffer last season, he certainly made a huge impact when he first broke through the ranks at Sunderland, and perhaps getting more game time under his belt will help him rediscover that form again.
The fee is believed to be in the region of £1.5 million, which as we reported earlier was agreed between the two clubs, and while it might be a step down the leagues for the former Derry City man, it will almost certainly benefit the Irish squad to have two players working together at club level, and they can hopefully transfer that understanding to the international team.
