No turkey this year, instead Jedward have been picked to represent us in Dusseldorf at the Eurovision Song Contest 2011.

Five acts competed in Dublin to fly the flag for Ireland, with the national competition airing on a special edition of Friday night’s Late Late Show.

John and Edward Grimes, who had been pre-show bookie’s favourites, beat songstress Nikki Kavanagh into second place by the smallest possible margin of two points.

Their song Lipstick, which is about lipstick, received 98 points compared to Kavanagh’s 96 points. The jury votes had put Kavanagh ahead, but in the end the votes of the public gave Jedward the lead.

The bonkers high-haired twins from Lucan will now be our ambassadors over in Germany where this year’s contest takes place in May.

But before Jedward get to perform in the main event on our behalf (in a slightly out of tune, strangely uncoordinated way) they’ll first have to get past the semi-final stage which take place in the days leading up to the final.

Speaking immediately after winning, and while simultaneously bouncing up and down, the twins spoke of their joy.

“It’s gonna be exciting, amazing, full on. From the moment we start people are going to have their lipstick on,” said John (or maybe it was Edward).

“We just wanna do well and bring the title back to Ireland.”
