It’s looking good so far. You’ve spotted a girl you like. Somehow, thanks to the miracle of science and the little baby Jesus, you’ve managed to get her phone number and have successfully asked her out on a date.
The next step is to make a great first impression.

JOE, in association with Intro.ie, will do everything in our power to help. The rest, unfortunately, is all down to you. Here’s a few handy Do’s and Don’t’s to help you on your way to bagging that all-important second date.
Good luck!
1. DO NOT ask your date to be your wingman.
Yeah, sure she’s got woman’s intuition in abundance and a “real swell insight into the female psyche,” but something tells us that she will not appreciate your request to help you in your misguided pursuit of a different, albeit less muscular, girl at the bar.
2. DO stick to the date classics. Don’t go OTT when planning the night out because an old-fashioned, gentlemanly dinner and drinks is the way to go.
Maybe even throw in a wee trip to your local picture-house for the latest Sidney Poitier-helmed blockbuster. But remember – NO POPCORN SURPRISES. Not on the first date anyway.
3. DO NOT freak your date out by asking “where do you see us, our 4 kids, 2 dogs and our goldfish called Gilly in five years’ time” on the first date?
She may not like goldfish and then your chances will be ruined. Stupid Gilly.
4. DO make sure to dress smart, NOT sexy.
Your bright green, sparkly, Borat mankini, while hilarious five years ago, is not appropriate for a first date. Not in the restaurant anyway. Save it for Date Number 4 at least.
And, whatever you do, make sure that you don’t turn up wearing the same dress as your date.
5. DO NOT reveal to your date that you already know everything there is to know about her.
Definitely don’t tell her about any of the intense pre-date stalking research you conducted. And especially do not tell her that you really liked the way she did her hair in that photo from 2006 when she was in Lanzarote with her ex-boyfriend Gus and that she was right to finish with him after he cheated on her with Grainne after he had said he didn’t even like Grainne in the first place anyway.
Do not do any of this.
So there you have it. Expert advice from the lads here at JOE. We cannot emphasise the word “expert” enough.
However, if you want to have a better chance of going on a second date with the potential girl of your dreams, then head on over to the good folks at Intro.ie for a match-making masterclass.
