JOE burger: The South African

We've teamed up with gourmet burger makers Jo'Burger to bring you  a few World Cup burger recipes that go great with the game. Presenting... The South African.

JOE

We’re big fans of Dublin restaurant Jo’Burger, a place that has built a strong reputation on the back of their tasty, high-quality burgers. For JOE, they’ve come up with a range of burgers that match inspired by the big event of the summer: the 2010 World Cup.

As we prepare for the final, we’re honouring the host nation with… The South African.

It’s a ‘Bunny Chow’ burger (sort of a sloppy burger) that you eat from a bowl fashioned fro a scooped out loaf of bread.

The South African Burger (serves 4)

1 kg diced beef
1 chopped onion
tin chopped tomatoes
2 Tbsp vegetable oil

1 stick cinnamon4 green cardamom pods, lightly crushed
spoon ginger
2 cloes garlic garlic
1 spoon curry powder
3-4 potatoes, cubed
Salt

1 or 2 (depending on the size) crusty, square loaves of bread

Heat the oil and add the cinnamon stick and onion.

Fry until the onion is light golden brown in colour.

Add the curry powder, ginger and garlic. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, then add the tomatoes.

Add the meat and cook for about 10 minutes. Then add the potatoes and about 1/4 cup of water.  Lower the heat and simmer over low heat until the meat is tender and the potatoes cooked. Keep an eye on things to make sure the bottom of the pot does not burn (it should take about 40 mins).

Simmer for a further 10 minutes on a low heat.

Cut small loaves in half, scoop out the inside making a bowl.

Bake for ten mins @ 180 degrees to crust up.

Dish the bunny chow into bread bowls.

That’s all there is to it! Eat and enjoy.
