JOE’s Alternative Match of the Week: Newell’s Old Boys vs Atletico Mineiro

JOE

Fancy watching some football this evening, featuring the one and only Ronaldinho up to some of his wizardry and magic? We thought so…

The semi-finals of the Libertadores are on this evening, and with Newell’s Old Boys of Argentina taking on Ronaldinho’s Atletico Mineiro, there should be some decent football on show.

Brazilian fans might still be partying after they won the Confederations Cup, but attention will shift back to their premier club competition, and the month-long break will surely have felt like an eternity.

Ronaldinho’s men travel to Rosario for this leg, and although he was left out of the Brazil squad despite being in scintillating form, the possibility of reaching the final should be more than enough to spur him on to continue making us believe that there’s still magic in those boots despite his advancing years.

Newell’s haven’t had an easy path to this stage of the competition however, and managed to overcome Buenos Aires giants Boca Juniors on penalties in the last round, but have had up and down form overall.

Atletico Mineiro have only suffered one defeat on the way to this stage, but also had a tight squeeze in the last round against Tijuana, and will be rejoined by Jo and Bernard after their exploits in the Maracana on Sunday night.

Overall, we’re going to say this leg will be tight, but the win across both legs will go to Atletico Mineiro, who have racked up 25 goals in a very free scoring tournament for the Brazilians so far.

The match will be broadcast on EPSN tonight/tomorrow morning at 1.45 am, so this is one for the night owls or to set the recorder for.
