JOE has been giving you a series of energy saving tips to keep your wallet full this new year, and we have more advice for you today to save you cash.

Today’s tip, considering that Valentine’s is just around the corner, is about the light of your life. That’s right, lamps. Now, we’re not suggesting that you go full on Amish and grow a beard while you walk around holding a candle, but if you choose the lights for each room wisely, you can save a nice chunk of change.

There’s no need to have all the light fixtures set on full with 26 bulbs lighting one room if you have an alternative like a small lamp that can give you enough light to do what you need to.

If you’re heading into the bathroom to brush your teeth, you don’t need the ceiling light, the cabinet light and a torch all going at the same time, you only need one of those options. We realise this might mean that your theatre style mirror with lightbulbs all around it is obsolete, but the saving will be well worth it.

If you can get small lamps into the rooms you spend the most time in, like the living room when watching TV, or under cabinet lighting for your kitchen, you won’t need to fork out come the end of the month for a huge bill. Don’t forget to fit them with CFL bulbs and you’ll be laughing all the way to the bank.
