What do you think when you see Croke Park? Sight of an epic All-Ireland win by your team. The place Ireland beat England in the rugby. Where Take That almost caused your significant other to run away and become a professional groupie.
That’s what most of us think. But some see the high end of the Hogan Stand and think “I would like to jump off that”. So the good people of the GAA have decided to try and fulfil their dreams.
The GAA have already applied for planning permission for a ‘Rooftop Walk’ something akin to what is already available to do on the Sydney Harbour Bridge, but now they are also going to ask for permission to allow people to abseil or zip-wire down from the stands.
Permission was initially granted for the roofwalk in April but local residents objected. Stadium director Peter McKenna said on Wednesday that he expects to create six full-time and 10 part-time jobs if it gets the go ahead, as well as 50 in the construction phase.
The local residents are very powerful, and will put up a strong case against this, but the sight of someone abseiling from the upper Hogan into Hill 16 is just too good an image to be denied. Make it happen GAA!
