As part of our Love Your County series, our focus today is on Cavan, whose most famous GAA day was an All-Ireland victory on US soil in 1947.
Sporting moment: 1947 All-Ireland Final, Polo Grounds, New York
Cavan have five All-Ireland final victories to their name, but by far and away the most famous of the lot was the first, and to date only All-Ireland Final played outside of Ireland. The Polo Ground sin New York was the venue for the Breffni County’s clash with Kerry, with 30,000 spectators at the Manhattan venue.
Cavan’s long journey to the city – it took 30 hours as they flew via the Azores – was well worth it as they emerged victorious on a scoreline of 2-11 to 2-07.
The victors travelled back via boat, with numbers gathering to see the team in both London and Birmingham.
Exploring on a canoe
What better way to explore the expansive Lough Oughter Lakes than to do so on a canoe? Stop at the different sites and bring along a picnic – don’t topple over of course – and different routes to suit all ages. A great way to do some sight-seeing while getting some exercise and fresh air in also.
