The City of Tribes is a proper dual county in GAA and a multiple threat when it comes to things to do.
1998 All-Ireland football final
After winning three All-Irelands on the bounce from 1964-6, Galway had gone over three decades without bringing Sam back the City of the Tribes. Their hurlers had won Liam MacCarthy three times in the 1980s but a football title eluded them; until 1998. Facing Mick O’Dwyer’s Kildare, Galway, inspired by Padraic Joyce, Michael Donnellan and Ja Fallon won the day 1-14 to 1-10.
The Aran Islands
Easy to reach from the famed Galway Bay, the trio of islands (Inishmore, Inishmaan and Inisheer) are one of Ireland’s treasures. Beautiful, rugged and packed with interesting places to see, the short daily ferry from Rossaveal takes you there but wrap up warm, your right in the teeth of the Atlantic out there.
Festivals
No city in Ireland has more excuses to hit the town than Galway. From the Oyster Festival to Race Week, never mind the Arts Festival, there is always a reason to hit the town in Galway. Few other places in Ireland have as many good places to eat and dine and when Galway decides to party, it does it in style.
