Our Love Your County series continues today with a focus on the Limerick and the All-Ireland winning side of 1973.

Sporting Pick: All-Ireland Hurling Champions, 1973

It seems hard to believe that a county as steeped in hurling tradition as Limerick has not won the Liam McCarthy Cup in 40 years, but such is the case. In fact since that great team of the 70s they have only won the Munster title on four more occasions, suffering heart-breaking defeats to Offaly and Wexford in All-Ireland deciders in the 90s.

That side of 1973 was stacked full of stars, with Eamon Cregan, Richie Bennis, Pat Hartigan and Jim O’Brien outstanding performers in their victorious year. Bennis saved his best for the final, scoring 10 points as the Treaty County had seven points to spare over the Cats.

The largest mountain bike trail network on the island of Ireland with over 50km of waymarked trails, and for those more interested in taking things by foot, it is hugely popular with runners and walkers alike.

See the Treaty Stone

Well if you are in the Treaty County, you might as well see where the name came from. The Treaty of Limerick signed on the 3rd of October 1691 after the war between William III of Hanover of England and his Father in Law King James II. You can find out more and see it for yourself.
