GAA moment: 1968 Leinster final

The late 1960s was the golden era of Longford Gaelic football. League winners, over the mighty Galway, in 1966, it took two more years before the potential of that team was put to use in the Championship.

Dublin were dispatched in the quarter-final, All-Ireland champs Meath bit the dust in the semi-finals and Laois were steamrolled in the final, 3-9 to 1-4. They would reach another Leinster semi-final in 1970, their fourth in six years. They have yet to reach a final since.

Go-karting in Edgesworthstown

Midland Karting & Paintball is one of the best spots for adrenaline junkies in the country. A fantastic go-karting track, over 1km long, will give you all the thrills you need and with the entire track floodlit, you can go all year round.

Add in the paintball facilities, plus the racing and flying simulators and it is a fantastic way to spend a day, or two, in the midlands.

Derrycassin and Lough Gowna

If you prefer your pursuits to be more gentile then Derrycassin Walk, along the shores of Lough Gowna (above), should be perfect.

With three different routes to take this forest walking trail will suit all ages and the scenery is pretty beautiful too.
