Our Love Your County series continues today with a focus on the Monaghan, the 1988 Ulster champions.
Sporting moment: Ulster champions 1988
Although the Farney County have won the Ulster championship on 14 occasions, only three of them have come post World War II, and they have never tasted All-Ireland success.
The last of those Provincial successes was in 1988 when they defeated Tyrone, when a goal from ‘Nudie’ Hughes saw Monaghan prevail on a scoreline of 1-10 to 0-11, with every score that day coming from play. Unfortunately Cork ended their dreams with a heavy defeat in the semi-final, but that was considered one of the most talented teams the county had seen in a generation.
Their final appearance against Tyrone in 2007 was their next appearance in a decider and though they suffered defeat, they ran Kerry almightily close in the qualifiers which would have been one of the shocks of the year.
