Love Your County – Roscommon

From All-Ireland success in the 1940s to St Brigid’s club success this year, the Rossies are a great GAA county.   From All-Ireland success in the 1940s to St Brigid’s club success this year, the Rossies are a great GAA county. GAA Moment 1: Back-to-back All-Irelands in the 1940s There aren’t many counties who win back-to-back All-Irelands in Gaelic football. Most that do are feted to the heavens like Down and Galway in the 1960s, Offaly, Dublin and Kerry in the 1970s and Meath and Cork in the 1980s. But Roscommon did it in the 1940s. They won the 1943 title by beating Cavan after a replay just four years after they were a Junior, not Senior, county. The following year they beat the mighty Kerry 1-9 to 2-4. Kerry got revenge on the Rossies in the 1946 decider. Roscommon have appeared in two finals since that 1940s heyday (1962 and 1980) but they lost both to you know who, Kerry. GAA Moment 2: St Brigid’s win the Club title 2013 We can’t let Roscommon go past in this feature without mentioning St Patrick’s Day this year. After knocking on the door for years, Roscommon’s St Brigid’s finally kicked it in at Croke Park this year. Fantastic Roscommon sides like Clann na nGael and Roscommon Gaels had lost finals, as had Brigid’s in 2011 but a first Senior Club Football success for Roscommon arrived this year. With living legends like Frankie Dolan and Shane Curran in their side they overcame Dublin’s Ballymun Kickhams by a solitary point in March, leading to this epic post-match interview from Curran. Visit Arigna Mining Experience From iron to coal they have digging up stuff at Arigna in Roscommon for over 350 years. Now turned into a tourist attraction, the guided tour with a former miner covers just how they worked and what conditions were like for the lads who worked underground. A great experience and a real insight into a miner’s life.
