In today’s Love Your County series we’re looking at Tyrone, who didn’t get a taste of All-Ireland glory until relatively recently, but once they started, they could hardly stop.

Sporting Moment: All-Ireland Final victory over Kerry, 2005

You could pick any moment from any of Tyrone’s memorable All-Ireland victories in the last decade but arguably the sweetest of them all was the defeat of Kerry in the 2005 final, possibly the greatest All-Ireland Final of modern times and certainly up there with the best of them.

Mickey Harte’s use of Peter ‘The Great’ Canavan was arguably the key to victory over the Kingdom as he scored a wonderful goal in the first half after a telepathic link-up with his former pupil Owen Mulligan and he came back on to guide the Red Hands to victory in the second half.

It was Tyrone’s second All-Ireland in three years and they made it three in six years in 2008 by beating Kerry again in what was truly a golden age for the county with a team that will go down as one of the greatest ever in the history of the game.

Visit the Omagh Memorial Garden

Located just around the corner from the site of the tragic Omagh bombing, the memorial garden, or garden of light, consists of a series of large mirrors designed to shine sunlight onto 31 pole-mounted mirrors, which represent all of the 31 lives lost on that fateful day in 1998.

See the Sperrin Moutains

You’ll have to wander a little off the beaten track, but the Sperrin Mountains, which dominate the landscape in Tyrone and beyond, are lovely to visit on a sunny day and there are plenty of scenic walking trails if you want to stretch your legs.
