JOE’s Love Your County Series continues with the Deise, home to the 2004 Munster champions in one of the greatest games ever witnessed.
Sporting Moment: Munster champions, 2004
For a county so steeped in hurling tradition, it is a little surprising that the Desie have just two All-Ireland successes in the small ball game. The men from Waterford have won Provincial honours on nine occasions, with four successes in the last 11 years and their 2004 victory over Cork was arguably the sweetest of the lot.
Winning captain Ken McGrath
After a narrow victory over Tipp in the semi-final having already accounted for Clare in their opening game, they took on the beaten All-Ireland finalists from 2003 in what would prove to be one of the greatest games of hurling ever seen. Paul Flynn grabbed an audacious goal, John Mullane saw red, Cork made a comeback but ultimately Waterford would win out by the narrowest margin on a scoreline of 3-15 to 1-21.
It was an epic game of hurling, with the emotion best summed up by John Mullane after the final whistle.

Viking heritage runs deep in Ireland, and nowhere is this more evident than the sunny south-east. Waterford in fact derives from the Norse Veðrafj?rðr meaning “ram fjord” or “windy fjord”. The Viking Triangle lets you explore the history of the city in a most interesting manner.
